Books
A major hobby of mine is reading (particularly of science fiction) so I thought I should create a section on my site for my favourite books, as well as literature that has had a profound impact on my life.
My early choice of books was heavily influenced by the church school and limited offerings of the local library. I can remember reading books by Enid Blyton, various Young Adult quasi-mysteries and Point Horror amongst other dubious titles. Suffice to say, I read through them quickly despite not really liking them that much.
When I moved on to secondary school, there were fewer constrictions on the sorts of books I could read. I browsed through the library and expanded the genre of books I read. I can remember quite liking the 'Hatchet' books by Gary Paulson.
I did however find some light sci-fi books by John Christopher including the 'Tripods trilogy', which I think was linked with the survival theme from Hatchet. Shortly afterwards the movie Jurassic Park came out, after seeing it I immediately hunted for the written version as well as others by Michael Crichton, which inevitably led to other Science-fiction authors.
I moved on to Issac Asimov; his 'Foundation' series was enlightening. Since then I have read many other books on various sci-fi premises, my favourites include the 'World War' series by Harry Turtledove, 'The Grand Tour' by Ben Bova, 'The Manifold' series by Stephen Baxter and the 'Discworld' series by Terry Pratchett of all people!
I also particularly enjoyed reading 'The Seafort Saga' by David Feintuch; unusually it is a military science fiction, which as a sub genre I haven't really explored. Others include works of classic writers such as Philip K Dick and more in the Masterworks list, which I am currently working through. My current favourite novel is 'The Light of other days' by Arthur C Clarke and Stephen Baxter.
I also read non-fiction, science and philosophy based.
